Justin is a founding partner of Hannaford Turner LLP. A transactional lawyer, he specialises in shipbuilding, conversion, refit and repair issues and ship sale and purchase, acting for shipowners, offshore contractors, equipment suppliers and shipyards. He is routinely involved with the negotiation, drafting and related contract management of shipbuilding and conversion contracts involving most vessel and unit types, including ferries, superyachts, container vessels and LNG carriers, as well as contracts (including EPC and EPIC contracts) for offshore procurement projects involving FPSOs, MODUs, PSVs and other specialised vessels. He has a particular focus on the ferry sector.

Justin has written widely on marine construction and refit topics, including for Law Business Research’s Private Wealth and Private Client Review and for its annual Shipbuilding title from its Getting The Deal Through series, as well as for Lloyd’s List, Superyacht Business, Shipbuilding Industry and Maritime Risk International. He has lectured on shipbuilding and refit/conversion contracting, ship sale and purchase law and recycling matters and has worked with BIMCO, serving as a member of its drafting sub-committee for the “Superman” standard form contract for the supervision of vessel construction and in finalising the recent revision to the “Barecon” standard form bareboat charterparty.

  • Ferry Acted for one of the world’s largest ferry companies (by fleet and route mileage) in various procurements for its fleet renewal programmes, mainly shipbuilding contracts for newbuilding projects but also in connection with contracting for design services, ship delivery services, mid-life upgrades, sale and purchase matters and recycling sales. Also involved in the relevant RFP process, including drafting the specimen shipbuilding contract and assisting with evaluation of the proposals, negotiation of the resulting contracts and award, and later during construction and on delivery, with numerous attendances abroad. Negotiations conducted with leading international ferry builders, including those from various European and Scandinavian shipyard groups.
  • Ferry Acted for a ferry operator on the shipbuilding contract for its road/rail ferry, involving negotiations with a European yard and national authorities and delivery issues.
  • Liner shipping Assisted a leading container line with its major retonnaging progamme, including advising on and helping negotiate multiple shipbuilding contracts, memoranda of agreement for ship sale and purchase and recycling sales and with registration, ship management and intra group matters for the line’s large, owned fleet. Negotiations conducted with leading international container ship builders, including those from South Korea and China.
  • LNG Advised a leading equipment manufacturer in relation to an EPI contract in relation to a conversion project for a major LNGC owner, together with a related shipyard services agreement.
  • LNG Assisted a European infrastructure operator in relation to contracting for the acquisition and conversion of an LNGC into an FSU by a Singaporean shipyard.
  • LNG Acted for a significant LNG project (backed by an energy major) in relation to shipbuilding contracts and spares sharing agreements for the project’s LNG carriers. Negotiations for the shipbuilding contracts conducted in the US and Korea.
  • Naval/government Assisted a European shipbuilder with shipbuilding contracts for multiple tugs, work boats and support vessels as part of a government maritime services contract. This also involved negotiation of direct agreements with project lenders.
  • Naval/government Acted for a European naval shipbuilder in relation to a shipbuilding contract for a naval project.
  • Offshore Assisted a North American FPSO operator in relation to an EPC contract with a Singapore shipbuilder for the conversion of a tanker into an FPSO.
  • Offshore Assisted a European yard with a shipbuilding contract for an accommodation support vessel.
  • Offshore Assisted with various recycling projects for North American rig owners.
  • River/Inland waterway Assisted with construction contracts for tugs, barges and other equipment for a South American infrastructure operator. The project also involved advising on design contracts, charters to deliver the tonnage to the client, and subsequently charter issues arising in service.
  • Tanker Assisted a Gulf state-owned tanker company with various shipbuilding projects for VLCCs, VLGC and other tanker tonnage, including negotiations with leading shipbuilders from South Korea.
  • Wind Assisted in relation to a contract for a self-elevating wind turbine installation crane vessel.
  • Wind Advised on T&I contracts to deliver infrastructure, including accommodation platforms, to offshore wind farms), including for a Northern European yard.
  • Yacht Advised on yacht construction contracts and refit agreements for numerous large superyachts (70-120m), including for a leading Northern European yard.
