Keith is a founding partner of Hannaford Turner, having previously worked at Curtis Davis Garrard (2004-2016) and before that at Holman Fenwick Willan (2001-2004). Originally from South Africa, he is an English-qualified solicitor specialising in project work with a skill set including ship finance, ship construction (including conversion, repair and construction of specialised vessels for the oil and gas and power generation sectors, including LNG vessels, drillships and FPSOs, specialist vessels and platforms for wind farms and others), sale and purchase of second-hand vessels, chartering and offshore oil and gas procurement, advising on drilling contracts and a general operational matters.

Keith acts primarily for commercial shipowners, ship operators and shipyards, but also for financiers, brokers, entrepreneurs and others. Keith also regularly acts for yacht clients and yacht brokers (primarily dealing with yacht construction, finance and resale).

  • Keith has travelled with various clients as buyers to negotiate numerous newbuilds directly with builders on location at shipyards in China (Dalian, Nanjing, Shanghai), Korea (Pusan, Changwon) and Turkey (Istanbul/Tuzla) for bulkers, chemical, specialist and multipurpose vessels and dealing with various related issues including restructurings. Accompanied clients’ negotiating teams and acted as lead negotiator in negotiations at the premises of clients in Brazil, Bahamas, Pakistan, Sweden, Norway and Canada for a variety of vessel types including cruise, ro-ro and has extensive experience with military vessels including patrol vessels and frigates. He has also advised owners and shipyards alike, for vessels built in Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Holland, the US (jack-up rigs) and Croatia.
  • He has experience in pre- and post-delivery ship financings and refinancings, including advising on loan agreements and related security packages, sale and leaseback, secondhand sales, Builder’s credits and vessel leasing and chartering arrangements.
  • He has extensive experience with ship and rig repair, particularly advising clients on contracting on standard industry forms and related issues such as guarantees and insurance. He is also experienced in ship recycling matters.
  • He is also interested in the regulatory side of the industry and has advised clients on matters including CII and EU ETS.
